Augustine on Scripture, Theology and Spirituality

In his Confessions, Augustine maintains that to hold a true understanding of God, one has to begin with a proper understanding of how people come to know the truth of Christianity. In order to properly understand Scripture, Augustine argued that a proper theology or understanding of God was essential. In order formulate this proper understanding of God, Augustine looked to Church authority and Platonist philosophy and theology. These two essential components, he believed, were essential in not only establishing an accurate understanding of God’s attributes (e.g., omniscience, omnipresence and goodness) but also a proper understanding of Christian Scriptures. Join us this week as we explore Augustine’s take on the ways Catholic Christians can know truth and thus lead spiritual lives.
